Desktop Conferencing - An Innovative Way to Communicate
by James Peterson
One of the easiest and most innovative ways of communicating today is called desktop conferencing. This technology is a practical way to communicate in that it can be done over the Web, with the convenience of staying at one's own desk. This communication tool also allows users to transfer data, share PowerPoint presentations and send text messages to all participants during the conference.
To set up a desktop conference call, one only needs a desktop computer that is installed with the required software application; an internet connection; a pair of earphones and microphone for audio; and a camera for display. Some operating systems are already pre-installed with the required software application. Otherwise, users can download from the internet any available conferencing software like MSN Messenger or NetMeeting for free or for a fee.
It is highly recommended to have a quality Internet connection with a speed of at least 128 kilobytes to ensure uninterrupted communication and efficient transfer of data. For activities and presentations that would require higher data transfer, like file or image sharing, presentations or videos, a speed of at least one gigabyte is suggested in order for the function to run smoothly.
Additionally, the host of the conference can conduct a one-on-one meeting with more than one participant. In the same vein, the technology allows a user to disseminate a message to a hundred or a thousand participants in a fast and near-seamless way.
For advanced desktop conferencing, participants can make use of the collaborative white boarding. This feature allows participants to share the same virtual board, wherein they can view, review and discuss from their own respective computers the same document, image, file or presentation in real time.

Israeli-Palestinian Start-Up Launches Innovative Software

A joint hi-tech team of Israelis and Palestinians has finished the advanced test version of the Global Hosted Operating System for computers. Our Israeli corrspondent was at the launch. A company called G.ho.st, an acronym for Global Hosted Operating System, claims that it has developed the world's first true Web hosted global operating system. It includes a personal desktop, files and applications, accessible from any browser or mobile phone.
[Zvi Schreiber, CEO, G.ho.st]: "Three years ago, me and my colleague, got the technologic idea to put the computer in one WEB page so people will get it from anywhere. We looked for Israeli Palestinian cooperation. I looked to Google and find some people I like and we built this joint team. I certainly hope that by getting Israelis and Palestinians together and by creating Jobs in Palestine, I hope we contribute something to Peace."
Among the approximately hundred people attending the event were special guests former British PM Tony Blair, and Noa Rotman, granddaughter of Israeli PM Izhac Rabin, who assassinated in1995.
[Tony Blair, Former British PM]: "We celebrate this great business, we celebrate the creativity, Chaled, Zvi, Alias and Anton but we also celebrate the fact that it is a symbol of a different changing world where people live together in respect and harmony."
G.ho.st was launched near the security fence in Jerusalem, despite a strong desert wind. This is one of the few places accessible to both Israelis and Palestinians without a need for a permit from mutual security forces.
[Montasser Abdellatif, G.ho.st Marketing Manager]: "We think that this is a model for Peace. We have 35 Palestinians based in Ramallah they are all software [people] and some are managers. Some people on the other side, they are at Modiin."
Is it difficult for the software teams from both sides to work via the Internet?
[Sawsan Murshed, Sahar Zakkak, Palestinian Programmers]: "Well it's not that difficult; whenever we want to communicate we can call by Skype or Mini-conference and share our ideas. It's not that difficult."
[Zvi Schreiber, CEO, G.ho.st]: "I certainly hope that by getting Israelis and Palestinians together and by creating Jobs in Palestine, I hope we contribute something to Peace."
Let's hope that more projects will be developed to promote peace in the region.
