Notebook Computers Or Super-Slim Netbook PCs - Which One Should I Get?
by Joseph Stutzman
Miniaturization, the science of making things smaller, has reached a whole new level. Hence, the geeks and nerds in Taiwan and Silicon Valley asked, "Well, the notebook is so big; it should be called a ledger. Why don't we twiddle stuff a little bit and make a notebook that looks like a notebook?" Thus, the ultra portable netbook was born.
The first, and most recognizable, difference between a netbook and the notebook is the form factor or size. Netbooks are usually about 10 inches wide diagonally, while laptops are around 15 inches wide. In short, netbooks are vastly more portable than laptops because they can fit practically anywhere - a sizeable purse, a small backpack, the glove compartment of a car. This is the main selling point of netbooks.
However, with this ultra-portability, Mother Nature inevitably kicked in. Netbooks are usually downgraded to the mere basics in terms of computing power and functionality. More often than not, they have less memory, less hard disk space, smaller screens, smaller keyboards, smaller everything, less everything.
People typically use them in very cramped positions. This matters a lot for those with arthritis or some psychomotor ailment. Moreover, as there are no optical drives, Netbooks would require a user to purchase an external drive to play CD's and DVD's. This can be a big problem if a user loves to make backups of his or her old files on optical disks. Furthermore, carrying a clunky external drive along with the netbook defeats the intended purpose of ultra portability.
But then, here comes the netbook again - with a spunky vengeance.
The netbook costs insanely cheaper than a notebook, often by a factor of 30-40 percent. A decent netbook for word processing costs around a quarter grand. Now, a notebook of the same price is usually delivered by paramedics or morticians, as no decent notebook costs more than 500 dollars on the average. Thus, if you're just borrowing your mom's credit card, then for the love of all that's good and holy, go for a netbook!
