Being A Great Writer - Quest For Knowledge Or Excuses?

by Jack Mason

Yesterday I was sitting at work and things were quiet as they usually are on that day of my workweek. So I ventured out to the web as I usually do when I have nothing to do at work or at home. I spent my time reading articles about writing books, writing articles, e-publishing, conventional publishing and visiting the sites of the various authors and experts. There is some really good information out there.

So I read and read and read everything I could in the span of my 10-hour work day (yes I am blessed with working 4 days and having 3 days off). So I read an article, click on the link for the author's blog or website and check out other things they had to say. The day came to a close and my head was full of wonderful information, so I packed up and left for home.

On the ride home I was digesting everything I read. Some of it I had seen countless times before and some of it was new and insightful. To think I was able to spend about 8 out of 10 hours reading about how to get published, tips on character development, how to make my stories real, tips to get noticed on the query letter (useful for when I finish my book), and a host of other tidbits to think about on my quest.

About five minutes from home I was going over something I had read about being focused on your writing. Set time aside every day to write they said. Set a goal to write for one hour a day or two hours a day. Or maybe a certain word count or a chapter a day. Focus on your writing and set the time to do it. If you have spare time here and there use it to write they said. Carry a notebook and use it. Use your day planner, PDA or other calendar to schedule your writing time if you think you need to do that. I thought to myself that I really needed to do that. Set the time aside each day and stick to it. Put it into my daily regiment and make it a habit. They say if you do one thing 15 times it will automatically become a habit.

Then a great light burst into existence shining down on my marble head as I pulled up to my house. One word resounded in my head - FOCUS. Then my right hand whooshed through the air and stopped with a loud smack on my forehead. I spent EIGHT hours reading about writing when I could have spent that time actually writing my book. Then I sat there and thought about all the time over the last few months I spent reading about writing instead of actually writing. I was flabbergasted with what I came up with for an estimate of lost writing time.

So here is my advice. Read about writing. Check the articles here or your favorite websites or read a book. Gobble up the information you can get from those that have been published. They've been there and done that and made the mistakes. You can learn from them. HOWEVER, don't loose sight of what your ultimate goal - to write a book and be published. All the information in the world about how to be a great writer will do nothing for you if you don't have a finished manuscript to show the world.

Stay focused on your writing. Don't use "I want to be a great writer so I am going to spend time learning how" as an excuse to get out of writing. Knowledge is good but it won't be of any use if you don't have anything to show for it. Go and WRITE! Finish that book. Stay focused and above all else have fun.
